Global Audience Witnesses Incredible Launch Event for Handball Championship
The Qatar 2015 Organising Committee staged a dazzling opening ceremony for the IHF Super Globe Championship 2014 at the all-new Qatar Handball Association Complex today, welcoming sports teams and handball fans from around the world.
The ceremony was inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali, Minister of Youth and Sports who was joined by Dr. Hassan Moustafa, President of the International Handball Federation, Mr. Ahmed Al Shaabi, President of the Qatar Handball Association and Head of the Organising Committee of IHF Super Globe, and, Dr. Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Director General, Qatar 2015 Organising Committee.
His Excellency the Minister of Youth and Sports unveiled a special plaque to commemorate the grand opening and the inaugural ceremony of the IHF Super Globe Championship 2014.
Hosting eight clubs from five continents, the Super Globe is set to be an exciting contest, and the opening event demonstrated the warm welcome and incredible hospitality that Qatar will offer to players and spectators.
The globally-broadcast ceremony began with a moving rendition by an Oud player who played traditional Qatari music, followed by the MC and host of the evening, beIN SPORTS presenter Mohammed Saadon Al Kuwari, welcoming the delegates, teams and audience to the championship games. The crowd was then treated to a video presentation on the building of the world-class Qatar Handball Association Complex.
With a seating capacity of over 5,400, the Qatar Handball Association Complex provided an ideal setting for the ceremony. It will also be one of the primary venues for the Qatar 2015 24th Men’s Handball World Championship taking place next year.
Dr. Hassan Moustafa, President of the International Handball Federation, said, “I am really impressed by this new arena as it showcases the abilities of the Qatari organisers and their great will to present the best World Championship ever. Back in January 2011, when the Qatar Handball Association was awarded to host the 2015 World Championship, my Qatari friends promised me to keep all timelines for this challenging project. To see handball matches now in the first newly constructed venue, the Qatar Handball Association Complex, proves that Qatar is on the right track. Constantly supported by the International Handball Federation, the project to host the first ever Men’s World Championship in only one city is already taking shape as the Qatar Handball Association continues building the future for handball in Qatar.”
Sharing a few words at the opening ceremony, Mr. Ahmed Al Shaabi, President of the Qatar Handball Association and Head of the Organising Committee of IHF Super Globe, said, “The Qatar Handball Association Complex, which marks a turning point in local handball, is a world class sport venue and architectural creation skilfully designed to meet all handball administration and technical needs. This facility is set to support technical and administration workforce to achieve the mission and objectives of the Qatar Handball Association and we congratulate the Qatari sports and Qatari handball family who were part of this success story.”
As the opening ceremony proceeded there was an atmosphere of excitement as spectators eagerly watched children walk onto the court carrying the Qatar flag and banners of the participating teams welcoming all to the championship game.
A special show also dazzled and delighted the crowd with an exciting light and music ensemble that showcased the culture of each team’s respective nations.
It then proceeded with a magical flying performance by professional acrobats and the spectacular show came to an end with the display of the IHF Super Globe Championship 2014 trophy.
On the first day of the matches, a special award ceremony was also held to commemorate the successful and timely building and completion of the state-of-the-art venue of the Qatar Handball Association Complex with zero injuries. The Vice President of the Private Engineering Office awarded Mr. Faisal Al Mana, Vice Chairman at REDCO and a representative from the workforce and labourers that helped contribute towards this achievement.
The tournament, which runs until 12 September, will see local sports clubs El Jaish (QAT), Al Ahli (QAT) and Al Sadd (QAT) take on international teams including crowd-favourites, FC Barcelona (ESP) from Spain. The Qatar 2015 Organising Committee has provided complimentary admission for all, so that everyone in Qatar can enjoy this incredible sporting event.
